Reading Redwall
I would like to tell you about one of my favorite books. The one I am reading right now is called Mariel of Redwall by Brian Jacques. I would not necessarily recommend this book if you are not interested in war. Although I am not interested in war, I love some of the other things in this book. It is about animals and I like animals. It is also about pirates, here called Sea Rats.
In this book there is a Sea Rat king. He is very vicious and cruel. The story is mostly about a daughter and her father who are captured by the king. He throws them both out the window of his fort into the water. They both washed ashore but very far away from each other. Her father washes back to the king's island but Mariel washes ashore near Mossflower country.
While in the water, Mariel forgets everything, even her name. She has a bit of rope which she knots in one end and uses to stun gulls who are trying to eat her. While on the beach, she names herself Storm because a storm washed her ashore. She names the bit of rope with the knot in the end Gullwhacker and also makes this her last name -- Storm Gullwacker. While on the beach she sticks her hand into the sand and finds it is wet. She digs a hole and makes a well. After she drinks she falls asleep. When she wakes up there is a big crowd of toads with tridents around her. She has many more adventures and meets the creatures of Redwall who become her good friends.
Joseph, her father, has made a group of warriors and they live in a hideout beneath the king's fort. Joseph has been raiding the pirate's ships and freeing the slaves. This is also how he and his warriors have gotten weapons. He is planning to attack the king's fort when he has enough warriors and weapons.
Eventually, after many events Mariel regains her memory and Mariel and her friends sail to the island and find her father.
I am looking forward to hearing the end of the story.
There are other books in this series. One of them is Redwall. Another is Mossflower. I liked both of these as well.
