My First Carpentry Project

I guess you folks out there have been waiting to hear what my first carpentry project would be. It wasn't a knitting box for my mother. It was a present for my friend. My friend has three imaginary friends that are fairies. For her birthday, I made a bed for them.

My parents took me shopping for supplies. We bought a bag of different shaped pieces of balsa wood. I looked through the pieces and came up with a plan.

First, I measured the pieces.

Next, Papa taught me to use the T-square to draw straight lines.

We used a clamp to secure the boards.

Then I cut them using a cross-cut saw.

When I made the cuts, there were some rough edges. I used sandpaper to smooth them.

My favorite part was hammering in the nails.

I used a level to make sure the bed was even. At first it didn't seem to be. Then I remembered that my marbles roll down the porch table. So I took the bed inside and checked again, and the bed was flat!

I painted the bed and Papa sewed a matress out of felt.

Mama knit a tiny coverlet and I made a pillow.

My friend told me her fairies slept in the bed last night!
