Voting day

Today is election day. People go to polling places to vote. Voting is the way we choose our president, governor, mayor, council members and other government leaders. America is a democracy. In a democracy, the president does not have all the power. The people have some too.

A long time ago, kings and queens had all the power. In England, the people made King John (also known as John Lackland) sign the Magna Carta. This stopped the King from doing unfair things to the people, such as making war and demanding high taxes. England is now a democracy.

I have noticed that President George W. Bush is sort of acting like America is not a democracy. He is taking away peoples' rights. I think he has too much power. People seem to have many different ideas about how he started the war. I've seen signs saying President Bush lied.

Here is a picture I made of a voting booth:

Today I read the following books to learn more about elections:

Vote! by Eileen Christelow
The Voice of the People: American Democracy in Action by Besty and Giulio Maestro

I agree with you about Mr. Bush. I am glad he cannot be elected again next time.

I agree with the above comment - you are very bright! Democracy is indeed a very complex but important thing, and it's never too early to take an interest in the issues at stake. It's important everywhere, but especially, I think, when you live in a world power like the USA. Mr Bush indeed has a lot to be responsible for.

And since you are such a well-read guy, I am sure you know that the word democracy actually originates from ancient Greek, where the word "demos" means people and "kratos" means rule. So literally you could say that democracy means "people rule"! Power to the people!
